If you’re like most people it seems so very far away right now. It may seem so far off that you don’t know where to start and it seems hopeless even trying.
Take heart – that is exactly how you’re supposed to feel! That means you’ve got an awesome vision that’s really going to stretch you and shape you into something great. Let’s get started.
The first thing to do is start building your map to take you from where you are to where you want to be.
First things first, let’s put some clarity to your vision. What is one significant step you could take in the next six months that would move you closer to your goal? Think BIG here! I want your palms to sweat a little bit and your heart to race! This is going to be the first great step towards the life of your dreams!
I’ll wait patiently while you do that…
Calibrate your map
This next step is an easy but important one. We’re going to reshape and rework the big step you wrote down into something carefully crafted for maximum impact! Here are the 7 steps to better goals:
1. Write it down
“Reduce your plant to writing… The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.”
– Napoleon Hill
You must write down your goals to give them the necessary clarity to lead you toward accomplishing them. Most people let their goals rattle around in their heads like marbles – not very effective.
2. Suspend Reality
Don’t filter, qualify, or judge as you create goals. Don’t worry about your experience, ability, or resources. Instead ask, “If I had every ability, resource, and skill available, what would I do?”
You’re not committing to goals yet, just letting the ideas flow on paper. You can decide later what you really want to accomplish.
3. Think BIG
What is the one thing that makes your palms sweat just thinking about it? What is your BHAG? Your Big Hairy Audacious Goal?
“The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it.”
4. State in the positive
Decide what you want to move towards, not away from. Focusing on problems will only bring more of it into your life.
Instead of “I want to lose 20 pounds.”
Say “I will be at my ideal weight of __ pounds by _____ date.”
Instead of “I want to get out of debt.”
Say “I will have a positive net worth of _____.”
5. State in the “I AM”
State your goals in the present first-person as if you have already accomplished them.
Instead of “I want to be a millionaire.”
Say “I am a millionaire.”
Saying “I want to” only reinforces the wanting in your mind and leads you to create more of that.
6. Be sure they are YOUR goals
A common mistake is setting goals you think you should set instead of the goals that make your heart sing. Don’t let your family, boss, friends, or anyone else dictate which goals you set. Instead, look to your core-values to help you root your goals in the deepest part of who you are.
7. Make sure your goals align with your values
Every promise has it’s price. Make sure the goals you set aren’t violating any of your core values. Neglecting this step sets us up for failure before we ever begin. Lining things up right will create energy propelling you toward your goal.
