Fans shook their heads in disbelief as the Longhorn Offense disappointedly trotted off the field and was replaced by the punt team. The familiar sound of booing grew out of the stands.
Third and nine, down by two scores, and we played it safe. Again.
We’d seen this too many times. Year after year we sat in the stands and stared in disbelief at the predictable, unimaginative play calling.
Roasting the Texas Offensive Coordinator was a favorite pastime amongst the Longhorn nation. It’s been too many years of the same thing.
We’re sick of it!
Sick of throwing one yard passes.
Sick of playing every game “not to lose.”
Sick of expecting to be good, but never executing.
Are You Any Better?
We’re quick to criticize the coaching staff, but how many of us are doing the same thing in our lives?
– You hate your job, but just wait for it to improve magically
– Your savings is empty, but hopefully next month will be better
– You want to meet someone new, but they haven’t shown up yet
What play are you calling on third and long that never converts? Be honest, we all do it. The only difference is no one gets angry enough with us to tell us we’re wasting our efforts!
Maybe the solution isn’t to run the same play better or more often. The solution isn’t to believe harder that this time it will work or to disguise the same thing in a “new” formation.
Get a New Coaching Staff
The solution is to fire your offensive coordinator. Install a completely new offense. Learn new plays and create a completely unique game plan from the ground up.
Yes it’s scary.
Yes It will feel uncomfortable at first, but a fresh playbook will breath life into your tired game plan. Believe it.
But whatever you do, quit doing the same thing and waiting for different results.
Two Great Examples
Two of my favorite examples recently of guys that went out and executed a new game plan are Andy Traub and Benny Hsu.
Andy Traub is a great guy I’ve been following for a number of years. What I love about Andy is that he’s not afraid to try something different. Most recently he launched Take Permission Media Network and is now producing podcasts for best-selling author Andy Andrews. Listen to Andy in this inspiring interview about his recent successes!
Benny Hsu had a great idea for an iPhone app like so many other people you probably know. The difference is Benny went out and created it from the ground up. He started with zero experience and wound up with an app that earned him over $20,000!
