026: Three Apps I Use To Fuel My Success

July 25, 2014 By deacon Leave a Comment

You know when you’re walking down the street to lunch and BAM, there’s that insight you’ve been hoping for. Isn’t that an awesome moment of revaluation?

And isn’t it equally annoying when it’s gone before you can find a way to jot it down?

Deep moments of insight into who we are and the problems we’re solving don’t strike when we’re sitting at our desk. They strike when we’re out in the world living our lives. If you don’t have a system for capturing, organizing, and using these pieces then they’ll just go to waste!

In this podcast I share my personal system that helps me catalogue inspiration and insight as it happens so I can sift through it later. You’ll learn:

  • Three apps that make up my complete system (and how I use them)
  • How having all my personal insights in one place helps me make better decisions
  • The exact process I use to capture limiting beliefs

Why I Almost Quit, And What Saved The Day

June 18, 2013 By deacon 7 Comments

don't get stuckA few months back I was down on myself for not making much progress towards my biggest goal. Every day I woke up and dreamed about what success would feel like. I worked hard too, so you can’t just play the “dreamer” card on me.

I just wasn’t moving forward.

Even though I’d been using the quarterback method for a while to help me get things done I was struggling to find results. It didn’t feel good.

I’ve been stuck here before, and this is the part where the questions start flooding in:

  • Am I really cut out for this?
  • Am I wasting my time?
  • Shouldn’t I be farther along by now?

Is it time to give up?

When those scary questions start to show up, you’ve got to act fast before they destroy your dream.

Luckily I had a secret weapon.

What To Do When You’re Mentally Out Of HUSTLE

May 7, 2013 By deacon 12 Comments

hustle-every-dayI remember coming home from a particularly tough day at the office and sitting down to work even more on my dream. I stared at the screen trying to force something out, but I had nothing left.

This is how you build dreams though right? You work when you’re spent. You create when you’re out of energy. You HUSTLE 24 − 7.

Despite dedicating over an hour or more to my dream, I accomplished next to nothing that night. I scanned my Twitter feed, I checked my email again, hoping for something easy to accomplish.

Nothing.

“Why can’t I focus? Does this mean I’m not cut out to build Life Stoked? Do I not want it badly enough?”

Deep down I knew I had what it takes to crush my life goals, but I couldn’t understand why I was failing in that moment. Working on Life Stoked was supposed to be the work I’m most excited about, yet here I sit – flat.

What the world tells you about HUSTLE

The world will tell you you’ve got to be on all the time. It tells you if you’re not hustling day and night, then you just don’t want it badly enough. You just don’t have what it takes.

The world’s wisdom leads to two outcomes:

1) Burning out.
2) Giving up.

If you’ve experienced either of these while building your dream, it’s not your fault (and I can prove it)!

From Hopelessly Overwhelmed to Unstoppable Force – A Case Study

April 16, 2013 By deacon 3 Comments

productivity-toolI felt hopeless more than anything else. Here I had discovered this amazing new world where I could design my work around my life (instead of the other way around), but I just couldn’t get there.

Why?

It wasn’t for lack of effort, that’s for sure. In fact, I’d been working on Life Stoked daily for over a year at that point. I knew exactly where I wanted to be, and I was already impacting others lives in exciting ways! The future was bright!

But in that moment last summer, I felt hopeless.

I remember sitting at my desk staring at my computer screen. A pile of notes lay in front of me, a pen in hand, and no idea what to do next.

There was just too much to do! Articles have to be written, marketing has to be planned, websites have to be updated and maintained, services have to be refined, and clients have to be served. And this was all “on the side” of being a full time husband, dad, and employee.

I was completely overwhelmed.

And so I did nothing. I froze. I sat. And I stared.

Days went by where I did little real work. As days turned into weeks I began to feel both frustrated and hopeless. I was frustrated I wasn’t making progress, and hopeless because I didn’t know how to handle it all.

What I needed to regain hope

What I needed was a way to attack and achieve my big goals without being completely overwhelmed. I needed a way to get big results with limited time.

And I found it. My quarterback method completely changed the way I work, and it completely changed my results! I want to share with you exactly how I implemented it, and five unexpected ways it changed my results!

Andy Traub on how rising early will change your life

January 29, 2013 By deacon 13 Comments

Andy-Traub-Early-to-Rise-Book

It’s morning again. And whether it was your alarm clock that jolted you from your peaceful slumber or your early-bird kids, it’s time to start your day!

We all know how precious sleep is. Get enough and you’re a fun loving sociable citizen. Get behind and it’s a non-stop flight to zombie land.

Which is why we cherish every last second we can stay in bed and soak up as much as we can before our day begins.

Once the day starts, we’re like olympic sprinters off the line racing to catch up to our commitments.

It’s no wonder so many of us are feeling tired, behind, and stressed. It’s no surprise we can’t find the time and energy to create a life we’re excited to live.

For most people this is reality. This is how they live their lives. And if you want to escape that reality, then you need a new plan.

Whether you knew it or not morning is the most important part of your entire day. It’s powerful beyond measure. Learn how to harness this power and you will transform your entire life. Ignore it, and you’ll likely have to settle for average.

Why you don’t have time for your dreams, and what you can do to fix it

January 15, 2013 By deacon 6 Comments

make-time-for-dreamsDo you know the single biggest excuse I hear for not doing something awesome? Time. That’s it. People don’t have time to start a business. They don’t have time to make themselves better. They don’t have time to be amazing.

And really, it’s the perfect excuse. How can you argue with it? You can’t convince someone to have more time. You can’t talk them into adding a few more hours to their day.

Time is the great equalizer. We all have 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week.

Yet somehow some of us are able to do amazing things while the rest of us run around doing busywork.

Why You Aren’t More Productive, And What To Do About It

September 11, 2012 By deacon 6 Comments

how to be more productiveDo you know someone who always seems to be taking things to the next level? Somehow, year after year they manage to make amazing progress and leave everyone else in the dust?

They’ve managed to start a successful business they love, run some projects on the side, have plenty of time for recreation, and somehow seem to be in great shape too. It’s enough to make you think that maybe you aren’t cut from the same cloth. Maybe you just didn’t get the butt-kicking jean. Maybe you can’t hack it at that level.

It’s not that they have more hours in the day, and it’s not that they have an army of people doing busywork. These are regular people just like you and me. They put their pants on one leg at a time… only once they put their pants on, they get eye-popping results!

The secret to taking things up a notch or two

I know what you’re thinking, “How can you possibly expect me to do any more than I’m doing already?!” I know you’re completely maxed out. I understand that adding one more task, even a tiny one, will send the whole stack toppling over.

So what do you do when all the energy and hours are accounted for? How do you take things to the next level?

How to go farther than you did last time

Each month I do a benchmark workout to measure my fitness. This month it was a 5k. Over the course of 30 days with zero specific running training (CrossFit 3 days a week only) I managed to take 90 seconds off my time!

It wasn’t just luck though. It was skill and strategy. And what I demonstrated in that second 5K is applicable to anything you want to take to the next level.

4 Productivity Tools to I Could Not Live Without

May 22, 2012 By deacon 9 Comments

best-productivity-tools

You know what they say, time is money! But that doesn’t mean it’s all the same denomination of money. Most of us trade minutes for pennies and nickels. But a few who have really worked to build something special can trade minutes for Benjamins!

While I’m certainly not in that class (yet), I work hard at increasing the worth of the minutes I do spend working towards a Life Stoked. Here are my absolute top, could not live without tools that help me continue to move forward every day.
