5 Limitations Holding You Back – And How To Turn Them Into Strengths

June 4, 2013 By deacon 7 Comments

Stuck on the highway in the desert.

In 1975 Stephen Spielberg was in the middle of directing a movie that would become a Hollywood classic. The revolutionary techniques used in this film would forever change the movie industry. Once it was completed and released he would shatter box office records.

But there was one major problem.

The shark wouldn’t work. Day after day production was delayed to repair the most sophisticated and expensive animatronic equipment ever built. And without a working shark, it was going to be pretty difficult to make the movie Jaws.

With anyone other than Spielberg at the helm Jaws would have been a theatrical and financial disaster. Yet somehow, Spielberg was able to take the limitation of a broken shark and make one of the greatest movies of all time.

How?

Spielberg understands that limitations can be a good thing. They can force you down new paths to find creative solutions. The end result is often better than you ever could’ve done with no limits.

We’ll come back to Spielberg and Jaws in a minute, but first I want to show you five common limitations and how you can transform them into a strength instead.

Why you don’t have time for your dreams, and what you can do to fix it

January 15, 2013 By deacon 6 Comments

make-time-for-dreamsDo you know the single biggest excuse I hear for not doing something awesome? Time. That’s it. People don’t have time to start a business. They don’t have time to make themselves better. They don’t have time to be amazing.

And really, it’s the perfect excuse. How can you argue with it? You can’t convince someone to have more time. You can’t talk them into adding a few more hours to their day.

Time is the great equalizer. We all have 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week.

Yet somehow some of us are able to do amazing things while the rest of us run around doing busywork.

How to do BIG things that freak you out

January 8, 2013 By deacon 4 Comments

do-big-thingsMy wife and I have a recurring conversation around our house. It goes something like this.

Me: “You know that new project I’m working on?”

Her: “Of course.”

Me: “When I started, it seemed like a really awesome idea. But now I can’t help but feel crazy for even trying.”

Her: (smiles)

Me: “I mean, I know it could work, and it could be really awesome… I guess I’m just freaked out.”

Her: “Awesome. That’s how you know you’re on the right track. Don’t let the Resistance get you!”

She’s right you know. Because every big idea you have is susceptible to the Resistance. In fact, the sole purpose of the Resistance is to keep you from doing big, scary things. It hates change. It hates risk. It wants to keep you comfortable.

But comfortable won’t get you anyplace worth going.

If you want to do something amazingly awesome, you’re going to have to face the Resistance. In fact, when you meet the Resistance it’s a good indication that you’re on the right path!

The Life Stoked Family Is Growing!

May 30, 2012 By deacon 15 Comments

starting a business and having a kid

I’m excited to share some big news with you today: The Life Stoked family is growing! That’s right, Cameron and I are expecting our first child this summer (it’s a boy) and we couldn’t be more stoked!

Although he’s still about a month away from joining us officially, it’s been a big adjustment already preparing for his arrival.

I’ve had a lot of time over the past few months to reflect on how my this momentous milestone will effect my life.

Somewhere along the way I think we’ve all been conditioned somewhat to believe that having kids basically ends your own pursuits. People say things like, “Enjoy it while you can,” or “Better do that now while you can.”

What You Need To Achieve

May 8, 2012 By deacon 4 Comments

goal-setting-why

I’ve always been a goal setter. As a swimmer growing up I set goal times every season. I’ve been through the process more times than I can remember and it was always the same. But when I tried to apply those same skills to other areas of my life post college I could never get the same results.

It turns out I was missing some important pieces that make all the difference. Goal setting is just the beginning. It’s goal achieving that counts. [Read more…]
