008: Taking risks and shipping from the trenches (with Tom Morkes)

June 11, 2014 By deacon 2 Comments

Tom-Morkes-headshot3The only real limitations are those in your own mind. You’ve probably heard that somewhere before. In fact, it’s somewhat cliche it’s so common.

But I’m guilty of suffering from it myself.

One thing I’ve always let hold me back in the past is lack of experience.

I looked at guys who had started great companies and done great things and I thought, “wow, what does it take to be able to start doing something like that?”

But really, it’s just something I let hold me back.

Tom Morkes is here to illustrate exactly what you can do when you don’t let lack of experience hold you back. Tom has some big dreams, and is already knocking them off one by one! And my favorite part of Tom’s story, he had zero prior experience in the industries where he’s currently making a splash!

Success Quote

“All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it’s impossible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strength to suffer.”
– Niccolò Machiavelli

Business

Author, consultant, coach, and the founder of Insurgent Publishing

Challenge

Tom set off on a year long expedition around the world with his wife, but he really needed some business ideas he was launching to come through if he was going to make it the whole way.

Rapid Fire Questions

One thing holding him back:
Fear of looking like a fake.

One thing he gave up:
“My pride! I’m done worrying about what other people think of me and my work.”

One characteristic that separates him from average:
That he stepped out and DID something.

One habit that contributes to his success:
– Grit. He continues to take action day after day and won’t take no for an answer.
– Shipping. He ships all the time.
